Whenever I get cold and start bitching about it, I am reminded of the good George Washington and his men and shut up, because they must have been freezing their asses off in the Deleware river, and they weren't complaning. I think I'm actually going to go to Wikipedia and brush up on my Colonial history now. The Brits got what they deserved. I find it ironic they call us violent and power hungry yet they were the ones who tried to rule the world with colonies.
Thanks you for raising my Nationalist pride.
If the president authorized an attack on Christmas day in our age... he would be crucified (I mean this pun) on Cable TV. The pundits rule the world. Up till that Christmas day battle, the colonists were loosing the war badly. The surprise attack boosted moral, and more importantly boosted support for the cause of independence. This battle was the turning point in the revolutionary war. And thus some dude 70 years later painted it. (with much artistic license)
I might be wrong here, but I read once that this painting is depicting a retreat while the British had the revolutionaries cornered and outnumbered. A foggy blizzard set in and the British decided to wait it off assuming they had no where to go, not realizing that the brash GW was willing to retreat through the icy waters, later allowing him to regroup with reinforcements and counterattack the British. In this YTMND: GW outsmarts naive Brits.
