RE: My Thor site. I didn't steal anything. I credited my sources, and if you read the comments, both original users fived it. There's a difference between plagiarism and tribute, and I was very, very careful to make sure that it was understood that I was tributing the originals, and not ripping them off.
I'm not trying to be a smartass, I'm just curious. You have a number of sucessful sites, so you aren't just some waste of bandwidth who talks a lot and doesn't do anything. I'm just trying to gt a feel for how you're using the term "steal", because it rankles, especially because of the nature of YTMND.
First of all, take it easy. YTMND is about having fun. Let's try to keep this casual and polite, please. There's no need to get worked up. Second, take a look at my other sites. I make or google my own images, and I invariably use my own music. Once, just once, I decided to tribute two of my favorite sites by combining them.
Now, I don't like fads, and I don't make fad sites. Go me. But they're an integral part of YTMND, and users either have to accept that or not use YTMND. Anyone who posts does so with the implicit permission for someone else to use their material. As you so kindly pointed out, I did so in the right way, by fully sourcing and not passing it off as my own. But it wasn't theft, it was using community materials.
Compare that to just going onto google image search and grabbing anything that takes your fancy, with a complete disregard for copyright or intellectual property. I'm not criticising that method, because I'm no stranger to it, but I'm certainly never going to defend it. That way frequently *is* theft, and it's certainly not morally superior.
See, your point about the pizza is kind of what I'm trying to get across. There were a couple o sites, amazing sites, with little pieces, but it was me who unified them, added something of my own, went to the trouble to find a colour version of the original image... And then I made damn sure to let everyone know who's quality ingredients went into my "pizza". For me, the theft line is when you try to pass things off as your own.
Like, if I took one of their sites, and added a little "made by MrDeodorant" tag into it, and maybe a watermark on the image. But it someone took my audio and used a little dancing Thor gif, I would be thrilled as long as they credited me. I apply the same standards to my stuff as I do to anyone elses, and again, the original authors, Spotz and mmcxii, both fived it and left comments.
